Danya Garner Selected as 2023–2024 ONS President
PITTSBURGH, PA—February 14, 2023—Danya Garner, PhD, RN, NPD-BC, OCN®, CCRN-K, associate director of continuing professional education at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, will serve as the next Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) president. During its November 2022 meeting, the ONS Board of Directors appointed Garner to succeed Jeannine Brant, PhD, APRN-CNS, AOCN®, FAAN, who concludes her three-year board tenure at ONS’s 48th Annual Congress® in San Antonio, TX.
“I am excited to begin the journey as the next president of ONS. I am grateful to be able to serve in this capacity while using my past experiences of service and mentorship garnered through ONS,” Garner said. “ONS has provided me with a plethora of resources and opportunities to not only positively influence the care of patients with cancer but also contribute to the nursing profession in a myriad of ways. I will use that energy to continue the great work that ONS has developed throughout the world as a preeminent member association and to engage with members to continue to elevate oncology nursing.”
Garner has been instrumental in nursing professional development and advancing cancer care education. In 2021, he received the 40 Under 40 in Cancer award, a recognition given to rising stars and emerging leaders under the age of 40 years who are making contributions across the field of cancer.
“I am so pleased that Danya has been selected as ONS president-elect. His depth and breadth of oncology nursing experience, dedication to ONS, and last two years of service on the board have prepared him well to lead ONS into this next season,” Brant said. “He will lead the forward motion with our new strategic plan and begin focusing on our 50th anniversary celebration that will commence in 2025. I look forward to celebrating with him as he assumes the ONS president role at ONS Congress.”
Garner is a long-standing ONS member and has served the organization in many leadership roles, including four years on the ONS Congress Content Planning Committee and two years as an ONS Board director-at-large. Additionally, Garner led presentations for ONS Bridge™, a virtual conference, on Staying Current During Constant Change and Diversity in Clinical Trials: Oncology.
