Inspiring, Diverse Nurses Join ONS's Young Leaders Pilot Program
PITTSBURGH, PA—August 25, 2022—Seven emerging Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) member leaders under age 40, representing diverse oncology nursing backgrounds around the world, joined the ONS Leadership Development Committee’s (LDC’s) 2022 Young Leaders pilot program.
During the next 10 months, the leaders will advance their leadership skills and engage with LDC members, past ONS directors-at-large, and each other to garner unique insight into leadership at ONS. They will attend meetings with LDC members and complete guided reading and activities to take their leadership skills to the next level.
Throughout the program, participants must:
- Attend a monthly Young Leaders meeting with the LDC
- Meet monthly with their mentors
- Meet quarterly with their ONS Board liaison
- Fully commit to engaging in the program’s activities and discussions
- Read all assigned books, posters, or articles
- Participate in at least one extra ONS opportunity (e.g., write an article, pilot an educational course, participate in Hill Days) the LDC identifies for their current and desired leadership level
- Attend ONS Congress® in 2023
- Provide insight into young leaders’ needs
Additionally, each nurse’s employer must demonstrate their investment in the nurse’s leadership growth by completing an employer support form.
Registration, travel, and expenses for the 2023 ONS Congress are covered for participants who complete the program requirements, and the leaders are also eligible for LDC nominations for ONS leadership awards.
“The launch of our Young Leaders pilot program represents an important milestone for ONS as we develop these nurses for future leadership in ONS, oncology nursing, and beyond,” LDC Chair Donald “Chip” Bailey, PhD, RN, FAAN, said.
