Leadership, Goals, and Missions Drive ONS’s Work
May annually marks a celebration of oncology nurses, and during its May 25, 2021, meeting, the ONS Board of Directors did just that: it welcomed and celebrated new members Valerie Burger, RN, MA, MS, OCN®, CPN, Danya Garner, MSN, RN, OCN®, CCRN-K, NPD-BC, and Patricia Geddie, PhD, APRN, AOCNS®, FCNS, and conducted an ice breaker to learn more about each other. Highlights from the decisions, updates, and other Board actions from that meeting follow.
ONS Voice Mission Statement
A periodical publication like ONS Voice has a mission statement to communicate its purpose and direction to readers and other stakeholders and to advance the organization’s mission. The ONS Board evaluated recommended changes to ONS Voice’s mission statement during its April 2021 meeting and made recommendations for revision. The revised statement was presented in May for formal approval, and the Board adopted it during the meeting.
ONS Voice’s new mission statement is to “provide readers with oncology nursing news, stories, and views from the Oncology Nursing Society and the diverse cancer care community to promote equitable access to high-quality care for those affected by cancer and to foster advocacy, inclusion, and collegiality in the profession.”
Leadership Development Committee
The Board received an update about future initiatives from a meeting with the Leadership Development Committee chair, ONS chief executive officer (CEO), ONS executive director, and the director of learning and development.
ONS Board and CEO Goal Review
The Board reviewed its goals and tactics for 2020–2021 and made plans to update the goal status summary. It also confirmed the CEO’s 2021 goals.
