Draft ONS Guideline Open for Public Comment

December 02, 2019

As part of the rigorous process of transitioning ONS Putting Evidence Into Practice recommendations into formal, actionable clinical practice guidelines (https://voice.ons.org/news-and-views/from-evidence-to-standard-the-role-of-clinical-guidelines-in-oncology-care), the draft guidelines must undergo a public comment period.

The first five ONS Guidelines™ to reach that step will be open for public comment in December 2019 and early 2020, according to the following schedule:

The clinical practice guidelines are intended for use by all clinicians who care for patients with cancer, not just nurses. The ultimate goal is to improve symptom management and outcomes for patients with cancer.

The guideline development project team followed the Institute of Medicine’s Clinical Practice Guidelines We Can Trust (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK209539/) book that lays out standards for rigorous and trustworthy guidelines and used the GRADE (https://www.gradeworkinggroup.org/) (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation) method of guidelines creation. GRADE provides a transparent and structured process for developing and presenting evidence summaries and for proceeding through the steps involved in developing recommendations. An interdisciplinary panel of clinicians and a patient representative was involved in the creation of each guideline.

To offer comments, complete the confidentiality form (https://www.ons.org/sites/default/files/2019-11/Guidelines_Confidentiality_Agreement_2019.pdf) and email it to research@ons.org (mailto:research@ons.org) for processing and access to the draft guideline.
